Madison Connecticut Nature Walk 06/07/2023

I took a nature walk on a trail in my town in Connecticut. The trail is not near any major roads and doesn't see too much traffic, but it is by no means remote. I went in the evening and the weather was very nice. It was around 65 degrees and sunny (although the sun was behind a thick layer of smoke). While the smoke was noticeable, it did not seem as bad in the woods. I saw a lot of biodiversity on my trip, and noticed many types of fungi and other plants. To be honest, I have no idea w...

Now an annotation

This project is technically defunct, but it is still useful to those unable to add an annotation and add a project.
Curation though is needed to ensure that all observations are annotated as "scats".

Currently the project has 4,415 observations
However, 2,932 of these are not annotated. If you would like to help annotate them, please do so here:

Flora of Denmark WA - Thysanotus

Thysanotus from Greek thysanotos fringed referring to the fringed inner petals.

The following table lists the Thysanotus species which are shown by Florabase to have been collected in Denmark Shire. The second column shows whether the species was included in the book Flora of the South West and under what name if different. If the species was described after Flora of the South West was published, the paper describing the species is noted. Where a species is not included in Flora ...

First Walk ! June 8, 2023

Dear reader, I'm Mariloli, a 20-year-old Panama City resident. Our first task with Inaturalist for my ECOEVO summer course was to spend 30 minutes scouting the area for any fungus. Since the first site I intended to investigate was in and around my neighborhood, I have to admit that I knew before I started that this would be a difficult undertaking. I basically live in a neighborhood with a golf course nearby, lots of woodlands, and a variety of animals and flora, all of which I was cert...

First Nature Walks 6/7 and 6/8

I had a great time on my first nature walk! I decided to take my dog on a walk on the public trail behind my neighborhood and around some nearby streets with wooded areas. Looking for fungi was harder than I thought! I found some mushrooms, moss and a few lichen on some trees. After watching the lecture videos from this week, I have realized that fungi are much more important to us than I ever thought. It was interesting to see some of these species out in nature, while really knowing ho...

iNaturalist Nature Walk - Module 4

Today I ventured into Central Park, for my first iNaturalist nature walk. Although it is not the complete wilderness, the park provides an outdoorsy feeling amidst the ginormous skyscrapers of New York City. As I strolled through the park (which was my first time ever there!), I was fascinated by the diverse array of organisms that call this urban place home. The air was alive with the melodies of chirping birds, squirrels darted among the trees, and I even spotted a red-tailed hawk but ...

Week 1 Update: 6/1-6/8

We’re officially 1 week into the Cherokee BioBlitz 2023! In just one week, we’ve already collected 286 observations featuring 203 different species. That’s an amazing job! Our map shows us that we have observations all over the county, from Acworth in the south, to Ball Ground in the north. We’d love to see the entire map filled by the end of the summer!

Each week we’ll also be picking our Observer of the Week. For Week 1, that’s jfornuto! This week, jfornuto found a Hous...

Reflections on iNat After About One Year

I came to iNaturalist because I wanted help identifying wildflowers. My wife uses an app on her phone that provides an identification of photographs, but I saw that iNat came highly recommended, so I decided to try it out.

As an aside, while I am a late-adopter of apps and such things, I have been an avid observer of plants and animals for most of my life, and honed those skills as a college student.

So after about a year on iNaturalist I thought I would reflect on the e...

Alaska Lady Beetle Community Science Project

Calling all lady beetle enthusiasts! I've set up a project aimed at celebrating our native lady beetles while also gathering information on the distribution and diversity of lady beetles around the state of Alaska. Any observations of lady beetles made in Alaska will automatically be included in the project; prior to 2023 there were 377 lady beetle observations uploaded to iNaturalist, I'm excited to see how many we can spot this year! If you'd like to peruse our beautiful lady beetles y...
